Solicitors in Doncaster

Doncaster is a market town of some 68,000 inhabitants, and is the second largest residential area in South Yorkshire after Sheffield. Locally known as ‘Donny’, the town is thought to date back at least two thousand years to a Roman fort on a site at a crossing of the River Don. The name is thought to come from the River Don, and the Latin word Castra, meaning a military camp. Its significance to the Romans is thought to stem from its position as an alternative to crossing the Humber Estuary on route to York from Lincoln.

Doncaster has always had strong industrial roots, due in large part to coal and its situation on various waterways. It has benefited from significant Government and private sector investment in recent years and has boasted one of the fastest growing economies within the UK. Much of this growth has been due to distribution, with Doncaster well located for both motorway and rail transportation. Retailers such as Tesco, Ikea, Next and Amazon all boast large distribution centres in the town. Despite many notable successes, Doncaster has also suffered its fair share of defeats, with notable recent industrial closures including Dupont in 1999 and Massey Ferguson in 2007.
