Solicitors in Bishop’s Stortford

Situated in East Hertfordshire, Bishop’s Stortford is a historic market town with roots dating back to a Roman settlement on the same site before the 5th century AD. The current settlement is thought to be Saxon in origin, sited at a ford over the River Stort, which unusually took its name from the town. The current name, Bishop’s Stortford, is thought to date back to a transaction in 1060, when a Bishop from London bought the settlement of Stortford for eight pounds.

Bishop’s Stortford has been a key market town for the area for well over two hundred years and the market remains a focal point for local trade. Today, the town’s economy is largely service based, situated as it is in close proximity to London Stansted International Airport. The town has seen significant growth in the past century, most notably due to its close proximity by rail to the centre of London, a journey which can be completed in a little over 40 minutes. As part of the London commuter belt, Bishop’s Stortford attracts financiers and other professionals who have helped to bring considerable affluence to this area. The area boasts several famous residents, including former England Rugby Union Internationals Austin Healey and Ben Clarke and former West Ham United footballer Dean Ashton.
