Solicitors: what should I know?

Should I meet my solicitor before deciding to hire them?

You should always have an initial chat with the solicitor before agreeing to hire them. You might choose to do this over the phone or in person. This meeting is a chance to discuss your situation before making a final hiring decision. This is particularly important if you have found a representitive online, rather than through a personal recommendation.

When you use Caven we make sure that your initial contact with a solicitor is over the phone. And if you aren’t happy with your consultation, or the solicitor's costs weren’t right for you, we can try another firm. This gives you much greater assurance of getting the right representation.

What sort of questions should I ask a solicitor?

Before you agree to instruct, you should find out as much as possible about the solicitor's experience and areas of practice. this will put you in a strong position:

  • How long have they been practicing?
  • What kinds of legal problems do they handle most often?
  • Have they handled a case similar to yours?

What, in particular, should I know about fees and costs?

You should ask how the fees are charged:

  • Is it on an hourly basis or a fixed fee for the work involved?
  • Would they consider taking on your case on a 'no-win, no-fee' basis?
  • When must you pay the bill? Can you pay it in instalments?

Make sure that you have a written statement explaining how and what fees will be charged.

Should I meet with several solicitors before settling on one?
