20% of all legal enquiries in Q3 2010 were for advice on employment issues

Press Release - October 2010

  • 9.4% increase in legal enquiries in Q3 vs Q2

London, 25 October 2010 -- A fifth of all enquiries fielded in Q3 2010 by find-a-solicitor service Caven were people seeking legal advice on employment-related issues.

With fears over public sector job cuts and the Government’s Spending Review weighing heavily on the employment market, Caven has seen a big rise in the number of people ringing their team of advisers to speak to an employment lawyer.
The number of employment-related enquiries also rose 5.1% in the third quarter compared to Q2 2010, and enquiry levels were up 13.3% on the first quarter of 2010.

Overall, the legal referrals website, which has a network of more than 5,000 solicitors throughout the UK, saw a 9.4% increase in legal enquiries across all areas in Q3 compared to Q2.

Ranking enquiries: the most requested legal advice in Q3 was for the following areas - employment (20.2% of all enquiries), family (20.2%), commercial (8.1%), civil litigation (6.1%), criminal (5%), conveyancing (4.7%) and immigration (4.3%).
Third quarter figures from Caven also revealed that:-

  • Family related enquiries were up 12.3% in Q3 compared to the previous quarter
  • There was a 10.6% increase in landlord and tenant legal enquiries in Q3 vs Q2
  • Immigration enquiries rose 12% in Q3 compared to Q2
  • Commercial-related enquiries fell 3.4% in the third quarter compared to Q2

Dan Watkins, director, find-a-solicitor service, Caven, comments:

“One out of every five calls our advisers fielded in Q3 were people wanting legal advice on employment issues, and employment-related enquiries were also up 5.1% on the previous quarter. What was evident was the split between public and private sector enquiries. Our advisers fielded a lot more calls from public sector workers in the last few months seeking legal advice, and we fully expect this number to continue to rise in the fourth quarter following the Government’s Spending Review and the prospect of heavy public sector job cuts across the board.

“Family-related enquires, and specifically divorce-related enquiries, were also up significantly in the third quarter. In the midst of the recession many couples were not in a financial position to initiate divorce proceedings. Now that the economy is on a more stable footing, we are seeing a latent demand for legal advice, as many husbands and wives feel more confident about proceeding and have decided that it’s time to make their move.

“The Coalition Government’s decision to impose an immigration cap has seen our advisers taking a lot more calls over the last quarter from people who need advice on immigration related matters such as extended visa applications and appeals to the First-tier Tribunal.”
