FAQs: Visas

Can I visit the UK without a visa?

A ‘general visitor’ is someone who enters the UK for a short visit. You will need a visa for this type of entry if you are a ‘visa national’, that is, from certain countries as specified by the UK Border Agency (part of the Home Office). Other nationalities will still be advised to bring documentary details of their short visit. However, some non-visa nationals must obtain a visa if they intend to stay in the UK for a period of over 6 months.

What if I want to stay more than six months?

Those who are subject to UK immigration control must hold the proper visa for their situation before entering the UK, such as a student, migrant worker or family member of a British citizen. You can apply at a British Embassy or High Commission in your country by completing application forms and paying a fee. If you are a European Economic Area (EEA) national or a Swiss national, you have the right to live and work in the UK without a visa. However, you must be able to support yourself and your family.

Can I enter the UK to marry a British citizen?

To come to the UK as a fiancé, you must be at least 18. You can apply for this type of visa on-line but you must visit a visa application centre in your country and register your fingerprints and biometric information. You must marry within six months of your arrival and settle in this country as a couple for at least six months thereafter.

How do migrant workers obtain a visa?

An employer can offer skilled workers from outside the EEA long-term employment, but must apply to the UK Border Agency for a license to sponsor migrant workers. The worker will need a certificate of sponsorship from the employer, when they apply for a UK visa. They will also need to pass a points-based assessment, based on the intended category of work and their skill-level.
