FAQs: Asbestosis

What is asbestosis?

Asbestosis is a form of lung disease which is caused by exposure to asbestos fibres. While asbestos fibres are known to cause some cancerous conditions such as lung cancer or Mesothelioma, asbestosis is a benign condition.

What are the symptoms?

As asbestosis is characterised by scaring of the lungs, some of the common symptoms are; finding it harder to breathe, a prolonged cough, and developing chest pain. Whilst all of these conditions can be treated, often involving the use of oxygen, unfortunately there is no cure and any damage cannot be reversed.

Who is likely to contract asbestosis?

As all sufferers will have come into contact with asbestos in order to breathe in the harmful fibres, there are certain tradespeople who are at a higher risk of getting asbestosis because of the nature of their job. These trades include builders, plumbers, carpenters and electricians. If you feel that you may have been exposed to asbestos in the past, it is important that you seek medical advice should you notice any of the symptoms.

Are there any laws to protect me against asbestosis?

Yes, for people who are likely to come into contact with asbestosis, there are a number of safety measures which all employers must take as set out in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. These include ensuring adequate training, suitable clothing and on certain jobs monitoring the air by measurement of asbestos fibres to control the risk to employees.

How could a solicitor help?

A solicitor will also be able to help you if you are diagnosed with asbestosis by advising you whether you have a case and are due compensation or financial assistance. Additionally, if you are in a high risk trade a solicitor will be able to advise you on what rights you have and what your employer should be doing to help mitigate your risk of catching asbestosis.
